Diethylene glycol may be used as an analytical reference standard for the determination of the analyte in toothpaste, poly(ethylene terephthalate) yarns, pharmaceutical products and human biological samples by various chromatography techniques.
General description
Diethylene glycol is a colourless liquid which is mostly used in manufacturing other chemicals. It is denser than water. It can be formed as a side reaction during ester interchange of dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol, it can also be formed when terephthalic acid undergoes direct esterification with ethylene glycol.
