Application
Nicotinic acid has been used:as a component of the MS vitamins stock solutionfor the detection of siderophores in Escherichia coli bacterial cultureas a component of the holidic medium for adult Drosophila .
Biochem/physiol Actions
Niacin is involved in the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), which is used in the adenine triphosphate (ATP) production in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. It also decreases hepatic production of very-low density lipoproteins (VLDL), and apolipoprotein B (apo-B). Niacin deficiency leads to pellagra.
